NDIS eligibility reassessment updates in 2025

NDIS support isn’t one-size-fits-all. When a participant’s needs change, an NDIS eligibility reassessment ensures their funding and services are adjusted to provide the right level of care and support.

As a participant’s needs evolve, their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support should adapt to reflect these changes
One way this happens is through eligibility reassessments, a process that helps determine whether a participant still meets the NDIS criteria and if their level of support should be adjusted. While reassessments have always been part of the NDIS, recent feedback from participants and disability sector representatives has highlighted the need for a clearer, fairer and more transparent process.
In response, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is making immediate changes to give participants more time, improve communication and ensure the process is as smooth as possible for them to get the right level of support based on their evolving needs.
So, what do these changes mean? Let’s break it down.
What is an NDIS eligibility reassessment?
An eligibility reassessment is a check-in to see if you still meet the NDIS eligibility criteria. This allows the right people to get the right help at the right time.
This isn’t new. The NDIS has always had eligibility reassessments, but recent updates mean some people are experiencing them for the first time. These reassessments are particularly relevant for:
- People who received early intervention support and whose needs may change over time.
- Participants whose circumstances have shifted, which means their support requirements may have increased .
- Individuals who have been on the Scheme long-term and require a review to determine if they remain eligible.
While this process is a normal part of how the NDIS operates, it’s understandable that many participants and families feel anxious about it. That’s why the NDIA is introducing key changes designed to make the experience fairer, more transparent and less stressful.
NDIS eligibility reassessment changes in 2025
Here’s what’s different, and why these changes matter:
1. More time to submit information
Previously, participants just had 28 days to provide supporting documents, which often wasn’t enough time to gather medical reports, therapy assessments and other essential paperwork. The NDIA has now extended this timeframe to 90 days to give participants more flexibility and avoid rushing to meet deadlines.
If more time is needed, participants can also request an extension beyond 90 days. This change acknowledges that disability-related documentation can take time to obtain, particularly when waiting on healthcare professionals.
2. Better communication throughout the process
The NDIA has also recognised that reassessments can be confusing and overwhelming, especially when participants don’t fully understand what’s required.
To address this, they’re working on clearer communication, through step-by-step guidance and multiple contact points before any decisions are made. Instead of unclear letters and rushed timelines, the focus is now on making the process as transparent and supportive as possible.
3. A more participant-friendly approach
One of the biggest concerns people have about reassessments is whether they’ll lose support suddenly. While reassessments aim to confirm eligibility, the NDIA has emphasised that many participants will continue receiving support as usual.
If needs have changed, the goal is to adjust plans fairly so that participants receive the right level of assistance rather than facing abrupt reductions. Before making any major decisions, the NDIA will also make multiple attempts to contact participants to discuss their circumstances.
4. Flexibility if more time is needed
For those who are currently undergoing reassessment, there’s some good news. If you received a reassessment request before 30 January 2025, you can now apply for an extension under the new rules.
The NDIA recognises that participants might have been working under the old 28-day timeline and wants to ensure that no one is unfairly disadvantaged by the transition to this new process.
How does the NDIS eligibility reassessment process work?
If you’re selected for an eligibility reassessment, here’s what will happen:
- You’ll receive a letter from the NDIA informing you of the reassessment.
- You’ll be given 90 days to provide any relevant documents (e.g., doctor’s reports, therapist assessments or other supporting evidence).
- If you need more time, you can request an extension.
- The NDIA will review your information and decide whether you still meet the NDIS eligibility criteria.
- If you don’t provide information or respond within 90 days, the NDIA may cease your access to the scheme but only after making multiple efforts to contact you.
As an NDIS participant, what do you need to do? Stay proactive. If you receive a reassessment notice, don’t ignore it. Use the extra time wisely to gather what you need and, if necessary, seek help from those around you.
Keep in mind that ignoring a reassessment request could mean losing access to NDIS support.
If you believe you still meet the eligibility criteria but are having trouble proving it, ask your healthcare providers, support workers or family for assistance in compiling the necessary evidence.
What the NDIS eligibility reassessment update means for participants
The extended timeframe of 90 days gives people more breathing room to gather the right documents, consult healthcare professionals, and secure accurate information that reflects their needs. No more rushing to meet tight deadlines or scrambling to find reports at the last minute.
More importantly, the reassessment process is becoming more transparent and participant focused. The NDIA is working to improve communication and clarity to make sure participants understand what’s required, why it’s happening and how to navigate the process with confidence.
For many, eligibility will remain unchanged, but for those whose needs have evolved, reassessment guarantees that support is aligned with their current circumstances. This shift isn’t about taking away necessary support but making sure that each person’s plan reflects their actual, up-to-date needs.
