Can an introvert become a carer? Ask our disability support worker Lizzyline and she’ll respond with a resounding ‘Yes!’
Lizzyline is originally from Kenya. She’s an avid reader (she can finish reading two novels in a day!) and a self-confessed introvert. “Interacting with people is hard,” she shares. “But being a carer gives me confidence and takes me out of my shell. I get to know about people in a fun and interesting way.”
She also likes the support she receives from the Leora team. “I love that they prioritise the wellbeing of workers and that is golden as mental health is important for a healthy workplace.”

Can you tell us about yourself?
I am from Kenya, Africa. Here in Australia, I’m currently studying for a master’s in management. I have a degree in law, and I am planning to study social work. One of my hobbies is reading, I can finish reading at least two novels in a day.
Do you have previous experience working as a disability support worker?
Being a carer is not common in Kenya. When my dad was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure, I took part in helping my dad in ensuring the correct amount of medication and also taking him to doctors’ appointments with mum.
This experience kept me thinking of how many people need that kind of help and support. So, when I got here to study, I decided I was going to do exactly that, support.
How did you find out about Leora?
It is hard looking for a place where you can work with harmony and understanding. It was hard for me. I was applying for jobs online when I found Leora. There was great rapport and ensuring that you are comfortable. They work with you to set your schedule, which is great for me since I am a student.
What do you like best about being a carer?
Being a carer, I get to interact with people which to me is a unique experience because I am an introvert and interacting is hard, but being a carer gives me confidence and takes me out of my shell. I get to know about people in a fun and interesting way. It gives me a sense of fulfilment.
What do you like best about Leora?
I can do what I love within my preferred time. I love that they prioritise the wellbeing of workers and that is golden as mental health is important for a healthy workplace. There is teamwork between the coordinators and carers and the friendly people in the company. They make the work much more enjoyable. It is the best place to work.
