Helen lives in Melbourne and loves exploring new places in her local community. As Leora client, she receives assistance every week from a Leora Carer who empowers her to do just that.

“I’ve been with the NDIS for a couple of years now and even my sister is on the NDIS because we both have a disability,” Helen shares.

“I found out about Leora from my support coordinator. I’m enjoying my services, they’re really, really good. My carers take me out to places where I want to go. They take me to the movies, they take me to work, they help with anything else that I need to do.”

Helen works Mondays and Thursdays. She lives with her mother and sister and plans her week so she can spend time with family but also explore the local community with the assistance of her support worker.

‘We work as a team’

“I sometimes have days when I’m free on Tuesdays, but I try to spend that day with my mum and just have mother-and-daughter days on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays, I have my support worker. Friday sometimes I don’t do anything, or I’ll have swimming lessons with my baby nephew.”

She says that she and her support worker plan where to go together: “We work as a team.”

“The best place I’ve been to with my support worker is the pools. We love swimming. They swim with me, we sit in the water, we sit in the spa, we sit in the steamer.”

Future goals

Other than swimming, Helen also enjoys singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. A self-taught musician, she knows how to play the acoustic guitar, harmonica and recorder.

When asked about her future goals, Helen says, “I can’t say work, because I already got work.” She laughs. “I don’t know yet!”

Just take it one day at a time?

“Yeah, that’s it,” she says.

Thanks, Helen!
