NDIS stroke recovery and support: Peter’s story of moving forward
Published Summary

Through NDIS stroke recovery and support, Peter has found a path back to the activities, connections and goals that give his days purpose.

We all have dreams and routines that keep us moving, plans for the future, hobbies we enjoy and moments with our favourite people. These are the things that give our days meaning.

But sometimes, life changes in an instant. A sudden health event or unexpected challenge can turn everything upside down, leaving us to find a new way forward. In those moments, having the right support can make all the difference in getting back to what matters most.

Peter knows this firsthand.

Nearly ten years ago, Peter had a stroke while at work.

“I don’t remember what happened. I just remember waking up for the first time in an aged care home.”

Peter spent three years in a nursing home adjusting to his new reality and slowly rebuilding his strength. When it was finally time to go home, he was ready to start living life on his own terms again.

Even though his sisters live in Switzerland, they stay connected with weekly chats on WhatsApp, sharing stories and checking in on each other no matter the distance.

Getting the right NDIS stroke recovery and support is crucial

After leaving the nursing home, Peter was with another provider for a while, but when they closed, he joined Leora Healthcare.

Through the NDIS stroke recovery and support, Peter has been able to regain independence and continue living a life filled with purpose. His support workers help him with cooking and getting out into the community, and these routines have become important parts of his week.

“Girlie, one of my support workers, helps me a lot. She takes me out to clubs every two weeks, which I really enjoy!”

These outings to social or hobby clubs give Peter a chance to stay connected, keep moving and enjoy the world around him.

Making the everyday and every day count

Peter’s days are filled with activities that keep him engaged and active. He spends time on his computer, catches up with his family and keeps himself busy with hobbies he loves.

“For fun, I do flying RC models. I go regularly to WRCS.”

One of Peter’s biggest passions is flying remote-controlled (RC) aircraft models with the Western Sydney Radio Control Society.

It’s a hobby that gives him a sense of independence and accomplishment, reminding him that there’s always room for joy and growth no matter what life brings.

Dreaming forward

Peter has a goal that keeps him motivated: getting his driver’s licence back.

For him, driving is more than just getting from one place to another. It represents freedom; the ability to decide where he wants to go and when, without having to rely on others.

It gives him independence, confidence and the joy of being able to drive himself to the flying field, to a club or to visit friends. It’s about reclaiming a part of life that the stroke took away and proving to himself that moving forward is always possible.

Peter knows it won’t happen overnight, but he’s determined to keep working towards these goals, step by step, with his support team and the routines he’s built around him.
