What Support at Home service types can I access?
Published Summary

Support at Home service types cover everything from personal care and home help to nursing, therapy, and home modifications, giving older Australians the right support to live comfortably and confidently at home.

The Support at Home program will make it easier for older Australians to access the care and support they need to live safely and independently at home.

If you are approved for the program, you’ll be able to choose from a broad range of Support at Home service types, depending on your needs and goals. These services are grouped into three main categories: Clinical supports, Independence and Everyday living.

Support at Home service types and categories

1. Clinical supports

These are health-related services provided by qualified professionals. They are designed to help you manage medical or therapy needs at home.

Examples include:

  • Nursing care (for wound management, medication, or monitoring health conditions)
  • Physiotherapy or occupational therapy
  • Podiatry or other allied health supports

Clinical supports are fully funded by the government, so you do not need to make a personal contribution for these services.

2. Independence supports

These supports help you stay active, confident and independent in your daily life.

Examples include:

  • Help with showering or dressing
  • Medication reminders
  • Transport to appointments or social activities
  • Respite care to support carers

You may be asked to make a contribution toward the cost of services in this category, depending on your financial circumstances.

3. Everyday living supports

These are practical supports that make daily life easier and safer at home.

Examples include:

  • Cleaning and household tasks
  • Gardening and home maintenance
  • Shopping or meal preparation
  • Assistance with laundry

As with independence services, contribution arrangements apply for everyday living supports.

How your services are planned and managed

After your aged care assessment, you’ll receive a Support Plan that outlines the services you’re eligible for. You’ll then work with your Care Partner from your chosen provider to create a Care Plan, which contains a personalised mix of supports that match your lifestyle, goals and care needs.

Your Care Plan will be reviewed every year, or sooner if your needs change. You can also request to adjust your mix of services at any time to make sure your support continues to suit your situation.

Can I access other similar Support at Home service types not on the service list?

Only services listed on the official Support at Home Service List are subsidised by the government. If you want to access services outside this list, you can arrange and pay for them privately through your provider or another supplier.

Your Care Partner can guide you through these options and help you make informed choices about additional supports.
